Cedar Swing Sets
Why do we like cedar swing sets the
best?
Well there are several
reasons for this, but first let's talk about the type of cedar
we prefer. The best wood for swing sets we believe is northern
white cedar. This wood has a long history, dating back hundreds
of years when it was first used for building boats. The reason
is that northern white is long lasting and splinter
free.
That means your cedar swing set will
last, and you won't need to use stains or paints. This is a
huge advantage not only in terms of safety (no chemicals) but
also in terms of maintenance. You don't have to sand it and you
don't have to seal the stain every year. The only thing left is
for your kids to have fun. As an added bonus this wood is
naturally resistant to both termites and rot.
It can be costly however.
Which is why regular red cedar is also
a great option. Often these swing sets are kiln dried and oil
stained, but they will retain a beautiful and natural
appearance. Sanding is recommended to prevent splingers, as is
a good stain or varnish. It will not only improve the look of
your set, but it will make it more resistant to the elements
and extreme temperature changes.
There are several ways to build your
cedar swing set. You can hire someone to come build it for you,
which is the most expensive option. You can buy a kit and put
it together yourself. Of you can simply buy or draw up some
plans, purchase the wood and materials, then get to work
building it from the ground up. While this may seem like a lot
of work (and it is), it's also a great family project or a
project for you and your friends. Have a BBQ, put some of your
favorite beverage in a cooler, and enjoy a weekend working in
the sun.
Just remember that wood is heavy.
Chances are you'll really struggle if you try to do this by
yourself. But friends and relatives and even the kids will love
to help you out.
When the job is done, you will have an
extremely sturdy swing set that the kids will love. And cedar
makes a beautiful addition to any backyard. Plus, almost every
cedar swing set can be expanded. That means you can start with
something small and add to it year after year. Add a slide one
year, a climbing wall the next, and they will all fit together
as if you had purchased it that way ready made from the start.
There are so many potential additions that you will never run
out of ideas. Just look in any brochure to get your idea for
what you will add this season. Your kids will look forward to
whatever bright new addition you have plans for every year. And
you'll feel good knowing that what you have in the yard is a
safe place for them to play.
And it won't be long before your house
becomes one of the most popular play destinations in the
neighborhood.
